Project Summary

Cooper Carry led programming and design to renovate the Fulton County Library System’s Central Library, a landmark in downtown Atlanta. Originally designed by Marcel Breuer and opened in 1980, the full renovation of the 10-level building modernized the public library to better serve the community while also providing adaptability for future advances. The design team convened community and staff members for input on priorities and features to maximize long-term maintenance and operations. The design incorporated cutting-edge technology, ADA-accessible spaces, improved lighting, and flexible rooms that accommodate a wide range of activities. The result is a unique mix of the classic Brutalist architecture with contemporary amenities and finishes, creating a sustainable, efficient design.

Campus Center Project at Georgia Tech

Project Summary

The Georgia Tech Student Center and Stamps Commons are the new central gathering place for the campus, where students, faculty, staff, and alumni gather for meetings, events, services, and more. The reimagination of the universities core will build a strong sense of campus community, as well as the Institute's strategic vision that will define Georgia Tech as the technological research University of the 21st century. The project was split into two phases. Phase I was the construction of three new buildings, including a standalone café, a wellness-themed pavilion, and an event building featuring eleven meeting rooms and an 11,600 SF ballroom. Phase II is the renovation of the existing Student Center with a new addition that will offer retail options, student organization spaces, two theaters, dining and lounge areas, and recreation spaces. 

All buildings feature abundant daylighting and views, with building orientations and entries determined by pedestrian routes. This campus project will enhance and support campus initiatives through the new department for Community Health & Wellbeing. Completing this project is critical to the growth and development of Georgia Tech, and to securing Georgia Tech’s position as a world class institution.

Project Summary

The Mike Cottrell College of Business (MCCB) Center for Business Technology + Innovation supports programs in accounting, law, computer science, information systems, economics, finance, management, and marketing. The college is also home to three centers of excellence: BB&T Center for Ethical Leadership, Center for Entrepreneurship + Innovation, and Center for Cyber Operations Education.

The MCCB Center offers learning environments to help prepare students to become highly qualified business professionals. The college’s pedagogy is based on theoretical knowledge of a wide range of business topics, with an equal focus on applying the knowledge students have learned.

Project Summary

The Integrated Science Complex (ISC) is a multi-disciplinary science instructional and research facility. The new building will house flexible research labs, faculty offices, teaching labs, imaging and microscopy suites, collaboration and study spaces, and a botany terrace. The labs will be interconnected by a linear equipment corridor accessible to all science faculty and students. The three-story building will also enable Georgia College to expand its forensic chemistry program, as well as offering additional science education courses for future teachers.

Project Summary

 

Clemson University's 16,000-sf Andy Quattlebaum Outdoor Education Center has become the first mass timber structure on the campus and the second mass timber facility in the nation to use Southern yellow pine as the primary building material. On top of the material and structural innovation, the building will also be a net zero ready facility. With the installation of PV on both roofs, the facility would produce enough energy to offset its needs. The project is part of a series of facilities located at the Snow Family Outdoor Fitness and Wellness Complex.

Designed to enhance the opportunities of Clemson students to achieve mental and physical wellness through interaction with nature, the Center comprises two multi-use classroom studios capable of supporting activities such as yoga, rowing, wellness seminars, nutrition, expedition planning, and other events. The facility also includes a resource for trip planning, equipment rentals, a bike repair/rental shop, a boathouse, a covered patio, a lounge, and a second-level deck overlooking Lake Hartwell.

Project Summary

Address growing demands for a updated student-oriented space, the Campus Life Center (CLC) is the new central hub for discourse, social gathering, cultural exploration, and service opportunities on Emory University's campus. The building will provide more room for student organizations and gathering spaces, larger more flexible and efficient dining services, and access to upgraded technology. The new facility is also located at the crossroads of multiple campus pathways making in the destination for students building a strong sense of community on the notably expansive and walkable campus. Recurring themes of ‘community building, ’‘collaboration space,’ and ‘out of the box thinking’ informed the arrangement of pavilions and multi-story spaces on a hill. A generous canopy unifies the individual pavilions, which are made permeable with the creation of circulation and lounge areas placed between program elements including intimate study spots and a large public piazza.

Project Summary

Ranked No. 5 best public health program in the world, the fast growing establishment was in need of a new home double the size of it's current space. Spanning a whopping 185,000-square-feet, the 10-story facility is the third building constructed for the Rollins School of Public Health. Radiant with natural light, the building is to become an international setting for public health education and affairs; to actively support and facilitate the continuing rise in the rating and status of the program in the country; and to be an active agent in the recruitment and retention of distinguished faculty/researchers and PhD candidates. ​The project will also house six academic departments including behavioral sciences and health education, biostatistics, environmental health, epidemiology, health policy and management, and global health.

Project Summary

The Tony & Libba Rane Culinary Science Center, is a new 115,000-square-foot center located on the edge of Auburn University's campus, will serve as an academic resource for students interested in food and beverage or hospitality-focused careers, providing access to real-world learning experience. The center will support the nascent culinary science and hospitality program to connect good food and hospitality to personal well-being and development.

The Rane Center is a complex compilation of multiple building types that include The Laurel Hotel and Spa, a teaching restaurant, bakery, incubator center, culinary classrooms, instructional laboratories, functioning rooftop garden, food hall, café, courtyard as well as collaborative spaces. The center provides promising culinary graduates the opportunity to create a startup for their restaurant concept. Auburn will sponsor these students in the two incubator stalls. If their concepts become successful, they can graduate into a larger stall, an on-campus location, or an off-campus restaurant.

Project Summary

1950 & 2000 Opportunity Way at Reston Gateway is a new mixed-use development that adds workplace opportunities to the amenity-rich community environment of the highly successful Reston Town Center. Designed for technology-based companies and businesses, the 1 Million-SF project includes elevated terraces, a grand lobby, elevated plazas and walkways, numerous tenant amenities, and plaza-level retail and restaurants. The below grade infrastructure podium includes a shared loading facility, central mechanical and stormwater facilities, and more than 1880 parking spaces for the mixed-use towers above. 

 

Overall, the two corporate office towers are just the first step in a 4.4 million GSF masterplan to connect the original 1990’s Reston Town Center to the new WMATA Metro Silver Line Reston station. The new neighborhood will enlarge the existing walkable, mixed-use community to the Metro station and replace an existing suburban office park and park-and-ride facility. Other phases will include new residential towers, multiple hotels, and an urban street network. The open spaces are the major organizing feature of the new community with 6.25 acres of passive, active, and recreational areas including a central 1.38 acre park with plazas and greenspaces, as well as connections to the Washington and Old Dominion Trail. The Reston Town Center NXT development has already been LEED-ND (Neighborhood Development) Gold certified, and the 1950 & 2000 Opportunity Way Office towers Gold Certified. 

About the Firm

Pattern R+D is an Atlanta-based sustainability consultant firm that uses advanced analysis tools to identify and integrate viable strategies to help clients achieve their sustainability goals.
