Fresnel cloud is a research, drawing, and digital fabrication project for a design course from the Rhode Island School of Design. The task was to select a museum object, and find various methods to draw the object using different digital fabrication tools. I was drawn to the lazer cutter and a glass cloud sculpture.

Throughout the semester, I made various digital drawings of the sculpture and laser etch them into sheets of acrylic. Eventually I discovered a method of dense laser etching that would distort the view through the plastic. With this method I generated various lens objects which I would use to generate more cloud drawings. With luck, I sourced a fresnel lens manufacturer who would provide me sheets that could be laser cut and etched.

The final lens would be a 24"x36" laser etch acyclic sheet with laser cut fresnel lens inserts. The parallax sky lens could be held in front of the viewer.
