01// Introduction

As Team Lead and later Director of the Research Department at cove.tool, I developed the R2D2 workflow to refine the team's product handoff and software development cycle. Prior to the switch, our documentation was non-existent, the roadmap was only weeks ahead of the development team, and the questions that are most crucial to determine ROI were rarely answered. To address all of these issues, we dissected and modified the industry standard Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), shown in Figure 1. Changes would add clarity and set priority to the order of operations in designing and developing a new product suite/tool/feature. This amended process would upgrade our existing workflow and advance our organizational into an new age of efficiency and preparation.

About cove.tool

Those uninitiated to cove.tool, the web-based application was a platform that hosted a suite of tools design to save architects, engineers, developers, and contractors time and money. It did so with aggregating various building performance analysis (BPA) simulation into one platform, all project teams could collaborate on to set, track, and achieve their project goals. Some of the notable capabilities included estimating construction costs, calculating embodied carbon, mapping daylight and glare access, measuring occupant comfort, and more for buildings.

Because of its technical complexity and scientific veracity, additional planning and review stages were added at the beginning. To address cross-functional concerns, we also imbedded launch campaigns and sales/customer-success training into the process. The implementation of the R2D2 had over whelming success and even award recognition, with the company and its products winning the Architect Magazine's R+D Award.
